For those who haven’t been following the news, major changes are happening at Utah Valley University. From the new business building to the new CET Building in planning, UVU is on the go! While looking for a project to test QR codes on, I learned the Woodbury Art Museum was being relocated to the Lakemount Manor, the home of the late Melanie Laycock-Bastian. The new home had been donated to UVU in 2019, but had to be remolded to be up to code. With this in mind, I decided to tell a little about the history of the museum as well as tie-in the art museum’s future home through the creation of a brochure that utilized QR codes.

I included a message from the art director, a bit of history of the museum, and the obituary of Laycock-Bastian. Below is the rough sketches:

However, I was disappointed in the quality of the design, so I recreated a more detailed layout:

After completing the design, I decided to utilize UVU standardized fonts and color schemes. Stratum for the headings and Adobe Garamond Pro for the body. I determined this by looking at the UVU Web Style Guide and the UVU Marketing Style Guide:

Lastly, I utilized various text to fill the pamphlet. This ranged from the Director’s Message found on the new UVU Museum page to Melanie Laycock-Bastian’s obituary. I decided to include the obituary, because I felt that it honored Laycock-Bastian’s willingness to give back to the community.

Parting Thoughts:

The overall project presented a unique opportunity to dive into a piece of UVU’s history while researching the new home for the arts.

Although the brochure is relatively simple, I felt that it provided enough insight into the great asset that was being contributed to the community. Not only does the manor provide a new home for the arts, it also creates an opportunity to remember one of the great benefactresses of our school.

Additional steps I would like to take include talking with the museum director to see what would be necessary to get the brochures produced. It would also be exciting to be able to create an augmented reality tour of the museum and include it within the brochure.
